Velarde, New Mexico is a small town with a population of around 600 people. It is located in Rio Arriba County and has a long history dating back to the early 1700s when its first settlers arrived. Despite its small size and rural location, the town boasts several churches that are deeply rooted in its history and culture. These include the Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe Catholic Church, which dates back to 1842; the Velarde United Methodist Church, established in 1847; and the First Baptist Church of Velarde, founded in 1947. Each church plays an important role in providing spiritual guidance to the community as well as offering additional services such as events for socializing and fellowship. The churches also work together to serve their neighbors by hosting charity drives, food pantries, homeless outreach programs, and other initiatives aimed at helping those in need. With their combined efforts, these religious congregations are rightly enshrined as being integral pillars of life in Velarde.
